El Paso Holocaust Museum
Soccer: Sanity and Survival in Nazi Concentration Camps / Fútbol: Sanidad y Sobrevivencia en los campos de concentración Nazis
(Spec Work)
This exhibition explores the roles of soccer within the Nazi camp system. The humanity of the inmates will be explored, especially the motivations for said sporting events. Ultimately, this exhibition argues that soccer was played in these camps as a means of survival for prisoners, both physical and psychological. Due to the border location of El Paso, ads are in English and Spanish.
El Paso Locomotives Season Tickets
To celebrate the launch of the new exhibition, El Paso Holocaust Museum will hold a raffle where one lucky fan will win a season ticket pass for the El Paso Locomotives soccer team. To enter the raffle, one must visit the Soccer: Sanity and Survival in Nazi Concentration Camps exhibition and purchase a raffle ticket.
Limited edition EP Locomotives Jersey
To commemorate Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) and the opening of the new exhibition: Soccer: Sanity and Survival in Nazi Concentration Camps, EPHM is collaborating with the EP Locomotives to release a special edition Holocaust Remembrance jersey. With a design consisting of horizontal light blue stripes, symbolizing the 11 million lives lost during the Holocaust, the light blue colors are reminiscent of the prison garbs used at these camps. The stripes will also have a mosaic pattern, representing the diverse groups of people whose lives were lost during this horrifying event. On the sleeves’ cuffs, there will be a white train tracks pattern with a double entendre – representing the train tracks that lead to these camps and the symbol of the locomotives.
As part of the new exhibition, EPHM is calling on local artists to enter a decorative soccer ball contest. Artists must create pieces using soccer balls, and other related equipment, to illustrate the cruelty of Nazism and the Holocaust, along with their impact on the sport of soccer. The winners will get an economic prize and have their art pieces displayed as a part of the exhibition.
It’s more than just a game
In partnership with the El Paso Locomotives and Bravos de Ciudad Juárez, EPHM will sponsor a week-long youth soccer clinic in the famous Sun Bowl stadium. The clinic will be coached by staff from the Locomotives and Bravos, with appearances from star players from both teams. The clinic will consist of soccer drills, matches, and mentorship from coaches and players, along with educational sessions about the history of soccer during Nazism taught by museum staff.
